Image AI models have spread across the world without asking creators for permission. Today’s dominant systems — OpenAI, Midjourney, and others — were built on visual languages that artists spent lifetimes inventing. The most public faces of AI now adopt those languages as their own, freely, with no acknowledgment of the people who made them possible.
Many of us are reacting allergically. That reaction is fair. Raising our voices for our rights is necessary. But it is not enough.
This isn’t the first time technology has outrun ethics. When P2P file sharing arrived, the music industry was nearly destroyed. The technology was too convenient to refuse, and many people’s hands ended up red. But what eventually happened was not the end of music. Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube — legitimate frameworks were built that respected what we’d been respecting all along. Society caught up.
Society catches up only when someone does the work. And that work is best done by the people who value what’s at stake.
We believe creators are constitutionally unable to settle for less. That’s why we stood out in classrooms and outside them; that’s why we move the world forward, even just a millimeter at a time. Without people like us, humanity would settle for less. With or without AI, that hasn’t changed.
So we are not asking permission. We are making the move. Bottom-up. Grassroots. The way creators have always made it when the systems on offer didn’t serve us. We did it once before with foriio — when portfolio tools treated creators as recruiting pipelines instead of people, we built our own. We’re doing it again, for AI.
